The Bride: She's all about Him

As I was thinking of what my son’s bride would be like, I pictured a bride who would love HIM. She is all about him, not only how he makes her feel and not what he does for her. She is genuinely interested in HIM. She is interested in who is. God wants for His Son’s bride to be all about him. It reminds me of one of the first conversations I had with my mother in law.

I had just started dating Sarah and was invited to an event that she and her family were a part of. That day, Sarah asked if I could give her mom a ride to the event. It was no problem for me, so her mom and I drove up together. A part of me still thinks it was an elaborate plan to give her mom an opportunity to check me out for her daughter. Imagine this, 45 minutes in Miami traffic with the mother of the girl you just started dating. Now, it wasn’t as bad as I make it sound, but it certainly allowed for interesting conversation and much silence.

As we drove up, we went through the usual topics of conversation: the weather and traffic. After those five minutes were up, the heavy duty conversation kicked in. That’s when my future mother in law asked me this question, “Why Sarah?” I remember thinking to myself, “This lady doesn’t waste any time.” But I like that, get to the point and don’t beat around the bush. So I answered her, “Why not?” I then went on to tell her about all the virtues of her lovely daughter. I told her that Sarah was a woman of vision, a woman who possessed the heart of God, a person who was dedicated and motivated by the cause of Christ and much more. What I didn’t know at the time was that she was testing to see if I was pursing her daughter because of who she is and not simply because of what she did for me or the way she made me feel. She wanted to be sure that I was all about Sarah.

God wants for His Son’s bride, the church, to be all about Him. He wants us to pursue Him for who He is and not only for what He does for us or how He makes us feel. What do we call a bride who only desires her husband for what he can offer? What do we call a bride who only loves when she is satisfied or well compensated? The bride of Christ needs to rise above this and pursue HIM for who HE IS. It’s all about Him.
